There is no denying soul food, or slave food, is a huge part of African American culture. It is the food we gather around, that graces our Sunday dinner tables, that we associate with good feelings of home and belonging. It is the food our ancestors ate, that they took out of the South with them and continued to eat, like many immigrants do, to have something familiar in a new place.
We have handed these recipes down from generation to generation, and the food on our dinner plates has only become more abundant. Unfortunately, studies show that soul food is killing us. African Americans are suffering disproportionately and at younger ages from deadly diseases like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and other diseases associated with being overweight.
The large amount of sugar, saturated fat, meat, dairy, and soy in our diets is to blame. The good news is, the fix is quite simple, and it doesn’t have to mean giving up your favorite foods, your identity, or your community. In this book, I will show you how you can regain health, slim down, avoid deadly disease, and enjoy the vitality you want and deserve, with just a few simple but delicious switches.
Our ancestors ate the way they did to survive, but it is time for us to forge a new path for ourselves and future generations. It all starts with you. Are you ready to honor the sacrifices our ancestors made and eat to THRIVE instead of just SURVIVE?
